We are going to be carrying out a local study titled 'Seasides from the past.' We will be looking at similarities and differences between seaside holidays today and in the past. We will be thinking about how we know what holidays were like 100 years ago and what were they like. Part of our study will consider how seaside holidays have changed and look at how and when they became popular. We will visit Silloth and look at historic features and compare parts of Silloth with photographs from the past, comparing it to how it looks today.
Key Stage 2
Year 3 and 4
Our topic for the Summer Term is a local history study on Victorian schools and we will look closely at our school using photographs and historical records. We will talk about what Victorian schools were like and what a typical day entailed. We will compare the school curriculum to our curriculum and discuss old- style punishments. Carlisle archivists will carry out a workshop with us using historical records of our school.
Year 5 and 6
We will carry out a local study on Aspatria and visit the town to look at historical buildings and monuments; St Kentigern's church, Sir Wilfred Lawson memorial and drinking trough and the footbridge at Aspatria train station. As part of our visit we will look at different buildings in Aspatria and determine their construction dates as periods of time. We will discuss the ancient settlement at Aspatria of a group of Norsemen and how Aspatria developed from a village to a town in the nineteenth century. We will also study the introduction of the railway in 1842.
