Key Stage 1

Our topic for this term is 'Would you prefer to live in a hot or cold place?'

Children will:

  • locate the school on an aerial photograph;
  • create a map of the classroom;
  • locate key features of the playground;
  • draw simple maps;
  • investigate how they feel about their playground;
  • create a design to improve their playground.

Key Stage 2

Year 3 and 4

Our topic for this term is 'Why do people live near volcanoes?'

Children will:

  • name and describe the layers of the earth;
  • explain how and where mountains are formed;
  • explain why volcanoes happen and where they occur;
  • recognise the negative and positive effects of living near a volcano;
  • explain what earthquakes are and where they occur;
  • observe and record the location of rocks around the school grounds and discuss findings.

Year 5 and 6

Our topic for this term is 'What is life like in the Alps?'

Children will:

  • locate the Alps on a map;
  • locate the key physical and human characteristics of the Alps;
  • describe the physical and human features of the Alpine region;
  • investigate what there is to do in the local area using data collection;
  • understand similarities and differences between the local area and the Alpine area;
  • understand the human and physical geography of the Alps.
